Thanks for the great ideas in our discussions.
Based on some of the wildly successful corporate consultations that we offer,
here's a fast and easy idea for you to practice your minute taking / note taking skills.
here's a fast and easy idea for you to practice your minute taking / note taking skills.
- Select one of your favorite TV or Youtube non-fiction programs
(e.g.home improvement show, documentary, cooking, etc.)
- Using your preferred minute taking style (e.g. pen and paper, smartphone, or laptop.),take notes on the program for up to an hour's duration.
- Remember, your minutes ought to be a summary of what was discussed or decided;
minutes are not a word-for-word transcription. - Thus a half-hour of notes might only have 3-7 bullets,
an hour of notes might yield 5-15 bullets.
- Remember, your minutes ought to be a summary of what was discussed or decided;
- Later, after the program is over,
read-back your notes to yourself in an audio recording,
or try explaining the program to a friend.
Do your notes make sense? - Type-up your minutes into a minutes template (found online or from your workplace),
summarizing the discussions and decisions made on the program.
- Email the completed minutes template to another friend for 'Approval.'
Do they understand your minutes, or are edits needed before 'Approval'?
Enjoy the minute-taking practice and let us know how it goes!
P.S. I highly recommend one of those home improvement programs:
- they encounter problems,
- discuss the possibilities for resolution,
- and then make decisions on how to proceed.
